Leopard Gecko Diet Requires Insects, Supplements

Leopard geckos are becoming of great interest today for many pet lovers.These lovely but exotic lizards do not need a lot of costly maintenance unlike other pets,and aside from it taking care of them is not that difficult.You only need to provide these lizards with a diet very similar to their natural environment in the wilds of Pakistan.

Leopard geckos are known for their brilliant coloration, and in order to bring out the full beauty of their features, pet owners must provide them with a nutritious diet complete with all the vitamins and minerals they need in order to survive and prosper.

start with the basics if you want to have a healthy diet for your geckos.Do not ignore their need for regualar water supply. Secure a water bowl for them in their tank and make it a habit to change the water on schedule. If you want put a rock in the water bowl for the insects to climb on out of the bowl,in this way you keep the insects from staining the water.

Geckos need a steady supply of water, so you should have a water bowl in their tank and change the water regularly. You may also want to place a rock in the water bowl that will allow any insects such as crickets you place in the tank as a food source to climb out of the water bowl, thus preventing the bugs from fouling the water.

Some of the things to feed the insects are tropical fish flakes, squash, leafy greens like romaine, wheat germ, mustard greens, kale, sweet potatoes, oranges, carrots, baby rice cereal, apples, collard greens,alfalfa, prepackaged reptile foods,dry cat food. Suggested is 12 hours of gut loading before you prepare these insects to your geckos. if you like buy some special gut loading supplies at pet stores.

To do this, you'll need to feed the insects tropical fish flakes, squash,leafy greens such as romaine, wheat germ, mustard greens, kale, sweet potatoes, collard greens, oranges, carrots, baby rice cereal, apples, potatoes (peelings are fine), alfalfa, prepackaged reptile foods, dry cat food. The gut loading should take place up to 12 hours before you feed the insects to your geckos. Special gut loading materials can also be purchased at pet stores.

In addition to gut-loading the insects, you'll also want to dust them with calcium, in order to provide this key nutrient that's essential to bone growth for reptiles. Calcium powder and other vitamin supplements for your gecko can be found at most pet stores. While feeding your gecko enough is important, it's also equally important not to feed them too much. Consult with your veterinarian or local reptile specialist concerning the right diet for your individual gecko.

It's important to note that breeding females will need a larger diet than their male counterparts, so before breeding make sure you know how much to feed your pet. Geckos can live well into their teens provided that they are kept safe and given a healthy, nutritious diet. Feed them reasonable portions and provide them with the necessary dietary supplements and you'll have a pet you can be proud of for a long time.
