Frozen Mice Are Better Than Live Mice For Snake Food
There has been a wide discussion in the world of pet snake owners as to whether feeding your snake live or frozen mice is the best option. Both sides of the discussion have some very relevant points. However feeding your snake frozen feeders is a safer and healthier option for your pet.
The safest choice when feeding your snake or reptile is to use frozen feeder mice. Live mice tend to have an aversion to becoming dinner for another animal. In an effort to keep themselves from being the next meal, they will bite and scratch your snake in a fight for their life. These injuries would not be suffered if your snake was dining on a frozen rodent.
Small mice may fight back and leave your snake with a few minor injuries, but if you have to feed a larger snake, such as a boa, you will be introducing larger rodents like rats into the cage. Rats not only fight back, but can also become the predator in some case. There have been more than a few pet owner who have dropped a live rat into the cage of less than hungry snake, only to come back later to find the rat had been eating the snake instead.
Another reason why frozen feeders are better for your snake is that if you order from a proper supplier, they are guaranteed healthy. What does that mean? Most breeders of frozen mice will ensure that their colonies are free from pest and viruses so that you know you are getting only healthy food for your snake.
Frozen rodents have benefits that are exclusively theirs. The main one is that it allows you to buy in bulk. Purchasing a supply for multiple months of your snakes food allows you to store it in your freezer until the time is right. If you are uncomfortable sharing your fridge with your snake's food, you may want to get a second freezer.
Buying frozen snake food in bulk can also give you a cost savings. Most online suppliers of frozen prey deal in larger quantities than your local pet store. Their low cost of overhead, and shipping in bulk allows them to cut a deal on volume to the pet owner.
Another advantage to snake owners is the ability to buy large quantities of frozen mice online. You no longer have to run out to the pet store every couple weeks to stock up. Now you can order a multiple months supply and never have to leave your home as it is delivered right to your door.
This debate will probably be ongoing for some time. However the evidence of the cost, safety, and convenience factors of using frozen mice vs. live seems to be mounting. All things considered, frozen rodents look like the best food for a pet snake.
